From Dirt To Dream Lawn
Rolling Out The Green Carpet: Our Step-By-Step Sod Installation!
Step 1
Preparing The Lawn
We ensure that the lawn area is already tilled and the final finish level has been made, with the grade level approximately one inch below sidewalks, sprinkler heads, etc. The soil should be moist, so we water it a day or two before installation. We want the soil to be moist but firm. Before laying the sod, we use a rake (or drag for larger areas) to level the topsoil. This levels out any small unevenness missed by our final grade in the preparation steps and create loose soil particles that the new roots can more firmly compress into when we lay the sod.
Step 2
Laying The Sod
We start laying the sod along a straight line, such as a sidewalk or driveway, or the side of a flowerbed along the house. As we lay out each piece in a row, we firmly push the end together, so the spaces between the pieces of sod are minimized. We lay two or three rows at a time (with rectangular sod) but keep each row staggered so that the joints are at different locations than the adjacent row. We use a cheap carpet knife to cut odd-shaped sod pieces. That way, the sod can fit around curves, sprinklers, plants, and other lawn obstacles.
Step 3
Rolling The Sod
After completing the sod lawn, we roll the sod with a lawn roller. The roller causes the roots of the sod to make firm contact with the new soil under the sod. This allows for faster “knitting” of the roots into their new soil home.
Step 4
Watering The Lawn
We water the lawn area we have planted regularly, usually daily, for newly sodded lawns unless it rains. After the first week, we stretch the time between watering so the roots will grow downward toward the soil moisture. All that is left is to wait and mow the new sod lawn for the first time in about three weeks.
